Reigning FMX, BMX, and Skate Champions Invited to 2017 Finals
The first competitors invited to the 2017 Nitro World Games will be the winners of the FMX, BMX, and skate events from last year, ensuring they will have a chance to defend their titles this summer in Salt Lake City. FMX superstars Gregg Duffy and Levi Sherwood, BMX phenoms Ryan Williams and Colton Walker, and skateboard extraordinaire Elliot Sloan have been invited directly to the finals. Tickets are available now for the 2017 Nitro World Games, which are set for June 24 at Rice-Eccles Stadium, to be broadcast live on NBC. Stay tuned for more lineup announcements in the coming weeks.
In 2016, the inaugural Nitro World Games reset the bar for action sports competition with new ramps, rules, and a variety of events designed to facilitate progression among the top disciplines. The focus on moving the sports forward paid off, with dozens of World Firsts landed over the course of a few hours. The first-place finishers each had to raise the bar to stand atop the podium at the end of the day, and there's no question that with the tone set at the inaugural event, this year the competitors will come ready to take it to a whole new level. Check out the highlights from last year's winners, and then read on for more about this first set of competitors for the 2017 Nitro World Games.
Duffy made FMX history last year when he landed the World First double frontflip during the FMX Best Trick event. He came to the competition as a racer who'd never competed in FMX, having only ever practiced freestyle recreationally and then in preparation for this competition.
Sherwood is a decorated athlete whose three X Games medals speak to the amount of experience he brought with him to beat a field stacked with legends in the FMX event.
Williams won the BMX Best Tricks event in a stunning upset over an experienced field of athletes, as he started out as a scooter rider and only recently transitioned to BMX. There's no question now that BMX can be counted as one of his primary disciplines.
Walker wowed the judges and the crowd during BMX Triple Hit, a fast-paced event with multi-trick runs that tests not only the BMXers' freestyle ability but their transitions and creativity as well.
Sloan, a competition veteran with eight X Games medals, stepped up in the Skate Best Tricks competition and laid down another championship run to add to his exceptional resume.
