Josh Sheehan, Jackson Strong, and Luc Ackermann Landed the World First on 10 September at Caerphilly Castle
The emotion of landing a double backflip … doesn’t matter how many times you’ve done it … it’s crazy. It takes everything you have.”
More than a decade after action sports icon (and Nitro World Games co-creator) Travis Pastrana stunned the action sports world with the first double backflip on a motorbike, it remains a very difficult – and highly dangerous – trick. To this day, only a handful of athletes even attempt them.
In the spirit of big air progression that is at the heart of Nitro World Games, Sheehan, Strong and Ackermann will aim to become the first to land this daunting feat. To do so, they will each need to launch their 220-pound bikes into the air just inches apart, timing their two rotations in precise synchronization both so that they do not collide in flight and also so that they each put both wheels down successfully on the landing ramp. While either over or under rotating would have severe consequences for a solo rider, with three athletes so close together if even just one of them crashes it could be catastrophic for them all.
Created by Nitro Circus and action sports icon Travis Pastrana, Nitro World Games pushes the limits of action sports competition. Featuring new big air formats, breakthrough ramp technology, and innovative judging criteria, Nitro World Games shifted the landscape for both athletes and the industry alike in its 2016 debut.
