2017 Skate Best Tricks Semifinalists Set
By Charley Daniels
The field is set for the 2017 Skate Best Tricks competition, with 13 athletes joining the winners from last year in Salt Lake City to compete for a spot in the finals, set for June 24 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The semifinalist additions are Marcelo Bastos, Asher Bradshaw, Jake Brown, Mitchie Brusco, Evan Doherty, Beaver Fleming, Rony Gomes, Andy MacDonald, Italo Penarrubia, Justin Rivera, Leo Ruiz, Jono Schwan, and CJ Titus. Tickets for the 2017 Nitro World Games are on sale now. Check out some highlights right here:
These riders will battle through the semifinals for a chance to face off against returning Skate Best Tricks champion Elliot Sloan. Clay Kreiner and Trey Wood, last year's second- and third-place finishers, were previously invited directly to the semifinals.
Skate Best Tricks organizers worked directly with the athletes who competed last year, as well as some of the top minds in the industry, to adjust the ramp setups for this year's competition. Athletes have been given extra time to practice on the ramps as well, ensuring the 2017 event will be even bigger than last year. The athletes are already sending huge tricks, including Fleming sticking a frontside cork 720, a trick he calls the Tennessee Tornado after a ride at Dollywood, which is in his home state. It was only the third time he'd ever landed it, and he says he's going to attempt it at the competition in Salt Lake next month. Just one of the many potentially huge moments developing for the main event on June 24.
