Eight More FMX Semifinalists Headed to Salt Lake
By Charley Daniels
The 2017 Nitro World Games Freestyle Motocross semifinals are taking shape, with eight more riders officially headed to Salt Lake City in June. These athletes will join the three returning podium finishers, two pre-qualified semifinalists, and two yet to be determined wildcard athletes to vie for slots in the finals, which will take place on June 24 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Tickets are already on sale. Check out the highlights:
Javier Villegas topped the field with a beautiful run, during which he showed he's been working for the last 10 months in preparation for qualifying for the 2017 NWG. Fan-favorite Fred Kyrillos also secured a spot. And FMX veteran Steve Mini, who hadn't hit a 120-foot gap in more than four years, is also headed to the semifinals. Leo Fini, Davide Rossi, Blake "Bilko" Williams, Cal Vallone, and Anthony Murray rounded out the field.
Reigning champion Levi Sherwood will proceed directly to the 2017 FMX finals, while podium finishers Josh Sheehan and Taka Higashino were invited directly to the semifinals. Harry Bink and Clinton Moore were also prequalified for the semifinals. Two wildcard semifinal slots are yet to be filled.
This year's Freestyle Motocross event tasks athletes with proving they're well-rounded by requiring every competitor to attempt eight tricks in succession in eight specific categories. Check out the FMX event page for a list of the trick categories and the order they have to be performed.
